Calendar 2020 inspired from Aboriginal Dot Art

Winter is coming and it’s been a beautiful evening with heavy rain.

This year, I decided to get my 2020 Calendars ready for you a little in advance.
Every year, I pick up a theme and work around the same to come up with a set of illustrations for my Calendar.

This year, I got inspired by ‘Aboriginal Art’ made by the indigenous people of Australia.

It includes work made in many different ways including painting on leaves, wood carving, rock carving, sculpting, ceremonial clothing and sand painting. Aboriginal art is closely linked to religious ceremonies or rituals. It is an important part of the world’s oldest continuous cultural tradition, based on totems and the dreaming.

There are several types of Aboriginal art and ways of making this art. This includes rock painting, dot painting, rock engravings, bark painting, carvings, sculptures, and weaving and string art.

To be more specific, my 2020 Calendar is inspired from
Dot painting of Aboriginal Art.
Dot painting is made up of small dots of paint colours like yellow (representing the sun), brown (the soil), red (desert sand) and white (the clouds and the sky). These are traditional aboriginal colours. Dot paintings can be painted on anything, including on rocks, in caves, etc. The paintings were mostly images of animals or lakes, and the dreamtime. Stories and legends were shown on caves and rocks.

Dot paintings are now internationally recognised as unique and integral to Australian Aboriginal Art.
The simple dot style as well as cross hatching maybe beautifully aesthetic to the eye but has a far more hidden meaning and deeper purpose; to disguise the sacred meanings behind the stories in the paintings.
