Year 2020 has been very uncertain and difficult for each one of us. I wish we all come out of it stronger and healthier. It has been very very long that I couldn’t post anything over here. Some personal projects kept me occupied on my toes. But now, I am back and ready to bring you some beautiful products and stories.

Some weeks back, I was approached by Ms. Tasnim – Marketing Director of Happy Threads on reading my article on ‘Bohra Caps’.
It was indeed very nice to know of the beautiful work they are doing to empower women in Dawoodi Bohra community.

The Dawoodi Bohras are a religious denomination within the Ismā’īlī branch of Shia Islam. The word Bohra comes from the Gujarati word vohrvu or vyavahar, meaning “to trade,” in reference to one of their traditional occupations which continues to this day.

Let’s know more about ‘Happy Threads‘ now!

Happy Threads initiative was launched by the Dawoodi Bohra community women for recognizing the lack of opportunities for women to capitalize on their arts and crafts-related skills. This initiative is inspired by the community leader Dr Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin’s desire to empower women and enable them to use their crafts and skills productively.
Happy Threads was launched under women-focused, non-profit organisation called ‘Supermoms4u’ in 2016.

Thier goal is to help these women achieve social and economic
sustainability through their craft. So far they have been successful in
involving over 710 women across villages, towns and cities of India.

Currently they have identified crochet as one of the most prevalent skills
which could be nurtured to produce various artifacts. They’re involved with

• Training the women to make in vogue and premium quality products through live workshops as well as audio video training.
• Ensuring a steady purchase from the women with upfront payments.
• Opening different marketing channels both domestic as well as
  international for distribution and sales of finished goods.

Aside from these, they have cross-promotional tie-ups with retailers like florists and confectionery brands.
They have also been successful in partnering with First Cry for their Soft Toys where they are not only listed on their website but also will be available at their five flagship stores across five different cities — Delhi, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Pune and Hyderabad.

The other marketing channels they use are exhibitions such as Indian Merchant Chambers (IMC), Ruchika, Helping Hands, Kalaghoda Fair and several other popular platforms in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune and Surat.

As a non-profit organization, Happy Threads aims to reinvent the parameters of what makes a successful woman today by making them skilled, financially independent and confident leaders.

As a part of its ongoing efforts to emancipate women artisans , Happy Threads is also extending support to other organisations and is currently involved with training of women for the district of Chattisgarh for their  NLRS (National Livelihood Rural Scheme).

For those who are new to Crochet, it is a process of creating textiles by using a crochet hook to interlock loops of yarn, thread, or strands of other materials. The name is derived from the French term crochet, meaning ‘small hook’. Hooks can be made from a variety of materials, such as metal, wood, bamboo, or plastic.
The key difference between crochet and knitting, beyond the implements used for their production, is that each stitch in crochet is completed before the next one is begun, while knitting keeps many stitches open at a time.

Crocheted fabric is begun by placing a slip-knot loop on the hook (though other methods, such as a magic ring or simple folding over of the yarn may be used), pulling another loop through the first loop, and repeating this process to create a chain of a suitable length. The chain is either turned and worked in rows, or joined to the beginning of the row with a slip stitch and worked in rounds. Rounds can also be created by working many stitches into a single loop. Stitches are made by pulling one or more loops through each loop of the chain.
At any one time at the end of a stitch, there is only one loop left on the hook. Tunisian crochet, however, draws all of the loops for an entire row onto a long hook before working them off one at a time.
Like knitting, crochet can be worked either flat (back and forth in rows) or in the round (in spirals, such as when making tubular pieces).
