The Gonds, are the largest Adivasi Community in India and
are Dravidian’s whose origin can be traced to the pre-Aryan era.
They are mainly found in Madhya Pradesh and its surrounding States.
The word Gond comes from Kond, which means green mountains in the dravidian idiom.
The Gond tribal community is one of central India’s largest indigenous communities
and their art is an expression of their everyday quest for life.
The Gond art rendezvous with the belief that “viewing a good image begets good luck”.
This inherent belief led the Gonds to decorating their houses and
the floors with traditional tattoos and motifs.
The artists use natural colors derived from
charcoal, colored soil, plant sap, leaves, and cow dung.
This mystical art form is created by putting together dots and lines.
The imaginative use of the line imparts a sense of movement to the still images.
The paintings are an offering in worship of nature,
and are also a mode of seeking protection and warding off evil.
Sometime back I bought this book ‘ Signature’ on Gond Tribal Art.
Tara Books (1994) is an independent publisher of dedicated writers, designers and artists who strive for a union of fine form with rich content.
While reading this book, I tried my hand making the patterns of Gond Art on the postcards.
These postcards are drawn with Black & Blue gel pen.
This art requires a lot of patience as their is no short-cut and a good imagination
is needed while making them.
